WILL KASSO AND THE GIANT SQUID

Ah, yes, I have lightened up. A morning riding around in a little red car (I'm female...what do you mean what make and model?) with an entertaining giant of a man and a tape recorder will do that for me. The man is a natural story teller, and he has the GREATEST true stories. I have tapes now, just like the CIA only mine are wonderful things that would make a great book and fantastic movie.  "You see that wall over there, where the brick above the mural is lighter? The mural was supposed to reach that high, but I fell off the ladder as I was painting the background."

Stories! Oh! Such stories. And I have them on tape.  This man is another Will Rogers. (Will Rogers used to stand on stage with his lasso telling stories.) I could picture Will Kasso,  spray paint can in hand on the same stage, but with the curtains all pulled, ropes hanging and back brick wall exposed.  If I could get the theater owner to agree to let Will take that wall and I supplied the paint, I could probably get him to tell his stories for free and get to keep the proceeds from the box office. This man LIVES to paint!

We rode from one wall to another and I heard the stories behind each one.  I began to acquire built in radar, "There's one!"

"Yeah, I had forgotten about that one," and out would come another story.  I got so excited about one of the walls Will had forgotten, he laughed, turned around and pulled into the parking lot of the building where a mural he had painted with a group took up the entire side of the structure.

We got out of the car as Will talked about the crew of men who painted the wall and explaining that Leon Rainbow had set up the theme and even gotten the pictures of the Natives that Will painted on either end of the display. One of the things I enjoyed about Will's stories was the way he described each of the men he had painted with and spoke of their accomplishments as much as his own. As we walked the length of the wall, ending near the front of the  building, Will struck up a conversation with a man who appeared to work there. The man, Chris McCloskey was very interested in the fact that Will was one of the artists who had done the work on the side of the building and that I was taping our interview. He asked if we had time to see his work...

And another adventure began.

Chris custom designs rugs. Big deal, you say?

Another Artist with his studio in Trenton.  Hmmm. Stay tuned...He's the one who gets top billing on my next post!

OK, so there was no giant squid...but there's more to come about the adventures of Will and tomorrow, Campers, if you stay tuned, you'll get to see a picture of Chris and the Giant Injun!
