I ate breakfast at the Marriott yesterday. As my friend Maureen and I sat sipping our coffee and tea at the end of the meal, the chef approached the table and brought us heated cinnamon Danish. I kicked back in my chair and said, "I would have no problem living like this." Maureen and I were the only two left in the dining area. The friends who invited us had gone to their room to get some things before we all went on an outing to Washington Crossing, PA. I scanned the room and soaked it all in. It's true. I really would have no difficulty living that way. For the moment I was living that way, and the present moment is truly all any of us own.
Maureen was flustered about the expense our host must be going through. I just chuckled, explaining if he could afford to visit from Wales and spend a week at the Marriott, I was sure breakfast was not beyond his means. He reassured Maureen by showing her four tickets he had for free meals. He spends so much time at Marriott Hotels he receives such things regularly.
I love my backward life. As the world struggles with changes in the economy, I breakfast at the Marriott and go sight seeing. I already know how to deal well with poverty. My life is taking a much more pleasant direction. If you can get happy poor and alone, being treated well in a group of friends doesn't require a lot of adjusting.
I loved the twinkle in the chef's eyes. She understood completely what I was experiencing. We made a connection.
Later in the day I experienced one of Maureen's Unique Guided Tours as we crossed a lovely garden area to open a gate and enter the back of a restaurant with a mountain of trash bags on either side. I waited for someone to come out the back door of the restaurant and holler, "Hey ! You! What are you doing back there?" There was indeed a good reason. We got to stand next to a sandstone sculpture of Washington Crossing the Delaware. We had seen it from the street and decided we wanted a closer view. The monument was a gift from the citizens of Bedford, Indiana area and the Indiana Limestone Industry to the citizens of the United States (I qualify!) commemorating the country's bicentennial. It is made of limestone.
Me? I'm still wondering who came up with the idea. "The bicentennial is coming. Let's commission an artist to reproduce the painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware and send it to Washington Crossing, PA." I can have tea at the Marriott, but I don't get ideas like that. The best I have come up with lately is, "Let me see if there is a way to include a recording in email."
There is. For those with Windows Operating System there is a recorder under Programs>Accessories>Entertainment. The recording can be saved as a WAV file and attached to email. Now that's not on the par of a major sculpture, but it's my gift to any part of the world that reads my blog. I might come up with some better ideas that are even original (for this one surely isn't) if someone wants to take me back to the Marriott for breakfast next weekend.
Any offers?
